About the museum
The Maison de la dentelle, in the local dialect Mèison di pitz, houses the permanent bobbin lace exhibition “I Merletti di Cogne”, dedicated to the dentelles de Cogne. It is in the centre of the village, opposite the parish church of Sant’Orso.
According to tradition, lace has been made in Cogne since 1665, when Benedictine nuns fleeing the monastery of Cluny taught the art to local women. The lace is made by hand on the lace pillow (tombolo) with bobbins and decorates tablecloths, bed linen and the traditional costumes of the valley.
Today the tradition continues thanks to the Les Dentellières de Cogne cooperative, of which about forty lacemakers are members and which produces about 1,500 metres of lace each year. The lace is valued for the complexity of its designs, its strength and its durability.
