About the museum
The Museo del Territorio “Casa Pezzolla”, also known as the Museo della Civiltà Contadina (Museum of Rural Life), is housed in a group of fifteen interconnected trulli between Piazza XXVII Maggio and Piazza Mario Pagano, next to the monumental Aia Piccola district. The name derives from Giacomo Pezzolla, a physician of the second half of the 18th century in the service of the Acquaviva d'Aragona counts.
The complex, recognised as a national monument in 1930, was acquired by the Comune di Alberobello in 1986 and restored between 1993 and 1997, a work that recovered its original appearance; at the end of the works the town museum was housed there. Towards Piazza Pagano is the oldest part, with single-room spaces in dry stone, equipped with a hearth and an alcove, while the front on Piazza XXVII Maggio has a two-storey section, an unusual solution for Alberobello.
The displays illustrate the history of Alberobello, the main agricultural activities, the building techniques of the trulli and the daily life of the people of the past, with tools, finds and evidence of the traditions and folklore of the Murgia dei Trulli. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and the Centro di Documentazione “Gianpiero De Santis” (documentation centre); at weekends it offers costumed re-enactments and workshops on lacemaking, music and traditional dances.
