About the museum
The MUDIT – Museo degli Illustri Tarantini opened in October 2022 in the former masseria Solito, in the south-eastern part of Taranto. The museum tells the lives and works of about one hundred and fifty figures from Taranto, from antiquity to the modern age, in the fields of art, music, theatre and politics; the biographies were reconstructed by some eighty researchers.
The masseria already existed in the 16th century, and from 1717 it was administered by the Reverend Domenico Antonio Solito. In 1886 the archaeologist Luigi Viola bought it, converted it into a residence and started productive activities there. In 2013 the Municipality of Taranto acquired it, preventing its demolition, and began its restoration. The courtyard preserves its ancient paving of chianche (large stone slabs), while on the ground floor barrel vaults, round arches and niches once used as mangers can be seen.
On the ground floor a multimedia route can be explored independently through digital documents prepared by the Centro studi Cesare Giulio Viola. The museum also includes a library, a literary café, a bookshop and a large courtyard; the upper floor is a conference hall. The site is run by a group of local associations and cooperatives.
