About the museum
The Molino del Dosso stands in Valgerola, on the border between the municipalities of Rasura and Cosio Valtellino, along the course of the Rio Fiume. It was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and was a mill made entirely of wood with two millstones, which for almost two centuries produced white flour and flour for polenta.
In the 1990s the building was abandoned and at risk of collapsing into the stream. It was restored in 1997 with local materials and traditional techniques; the stone-slab roof was rebuilt by local craftsmen known as “teciàtt”, and in 1999 the mill resumed grinding.
Today it houses the Museo etnografico Vanseraf, named after its founder Serafino Vaninetti, who collected tools and implements of the agricultural work of the area. The museum documents old trades that have now disappeared and the traditional crops of the valley, such as chestnut, rye, buckwheat and an old variety of maize.
