About the museum
The museum opened in Atina in 2013, in the house where Cesare Vitti, his wife Maria Caira and her sister Giacinta lived after returning to Italy. It holds materials from the Académie Vitti, a private school of painting and sculpture active in Paris, in the Montparnasse district, until 1914.
The academy was founded by Cesare Vitti and Maria Caira, who together with her sisters Giacinta and Anna had worked in Paris as models for photographers, painters and sculptors. Among the teachers were Paul Gauguin, Luc-Olivier Merson, Jacques-Émile Blanche, Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa and Kees van Dongen. When the First World War broke out, the Vittis closed the school and returned to Italy.
The family's heir turned the house into a museum, preserving the documents and objects that the descendants had kept for years, with a project to refurbish the spaces.
