About the museum
The first stone of the building was laid on 15 March 1966, on the twenty-second anniversary of the destruction of Cassino during the Second World War. The work suffered many delays and was completed only at the end of the 1970s; the museum was inaugurated in 1979. Since 2003 it has been named after Gianfilippo Carettoni, the archaeologist who studied Casinum and brought to light the city's Roman theatre.
The building stands along the road to Montecassino, against the walls of ancient Casinum and above the area of the amphitheatre, near the so-called Porta Campana. Since 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale del Lazio and then, from 2019, through the Direzione regionale Musei (regional directorate of museums).
The route covers about 500 square metres in three rooms, plus a lapidarium. The first room holds prehistoric and protohistoric finds, the second Roman ceramics and architectural materials, and the third sculptures and inscriptions from the amphitheatre and the theatre, including a small rearing horse in marble and a statue of an athlete. In the garden in front of the entrance, in vaulted Roman rooms, inscriptions and architectural fragments are preserved.
