About the museum
The Museo agrario tropicale is housed in the Florentine complex of the former Istituto Agronomico per l'Oltremare (Agronomic Institute for Overseas Territories), a technical and scientific body of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs founded in the early 20th century to study agriculture in tropical and subtropical regions. Today the complex is the Florence seat of the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation).
The collections bring together handicrafts, working tools, clothing and musical instruments from peoples of Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. Alongside the ethnographic objects are plant and animal specimens, including a collection of over five thousand tropical and subtropical insects.
The museum is complemented by the tropical botanical garden with its greenhouses, where around three hundred specimens of some of the most important tropical plants are grown, in a historic building designed by Aurelio Ghersi.
