About the museum
The museum documents the farming culture of the Bovesìa, the Grecanic area of southern Aspromonte, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It holds one of the oldest ethnographic collections in Calabria, assembled in the 1970s by the scholar of southern Italian affairs Pasquino Crupi and the iconographer Domenico Candela to preserve the memory of Grecanic culture, which remained alive in the area until the second half of the last century.
The collection comprises about three hundred artefacts linked to the area’s main crafts, accompanied by black-and-white photographic documentation. There are displays on the work of the shoemaker and the blacksmith, basketry, weaving and herding, with unusual objects such as the musulupare, wooden moulds for a Lenten cheese typical of the Grecanic area. Other sections deal with music, work in the fields and the extraction of bergamot oil, illustrated by a model of a Calabrian machine from the 1930s.
