About the museum

The building was designed in the late 1920s and completed in 1934 as the city’s foundling home. On 21 May 1943 a wartime bombing killed 33 children and some of the staff. Rebuilt in 1948, it housed child welfare services until 1970, then offices of the Genio Civile (regional civil engineering office) and, from 1983 to 1997, the engineering faculty of the Università Mediterranea.

After a long restoration, the palace reopened on 7 May 2016 as a cultural centre named after Pasquino Crupi (1940–2013), a teacher, journalist, critic and writer, chosen through an ideas competition. It belongs to the Città metropolitana di Reggio Calabria.

On the ground floor is the Piccolo Museo San Paolo, with icons, paintings, silverware, sculptures, archaeological finds, ivories and a library with incunabula and 16th-century books. On the first floor about 125 paintings confiscated from an entrepreneur are on display in the itinerary “A tenebris ad lucem”, along with the Collezione Calarco, which features works by Calabrian artists. The second floor, the Piano Contemporaneo, is dedicated to the art of local authors and to temporary exhibitions.
