About the museum
The museum, known as the “Museo della seta” (Silk Museum), was conceived and founded by Rosa Furfari and formally established in 1997, after more than twenty years of research in the area and travelling educational and cultural exhibitions. It is a small private museum attached to the company “Il Filo di Seta”.
Almost twenty years after its foundation, the museum moved to the hamlet of Ortì Superiore in Reggio Calabria. Recently it has been transformed into an “ecomuseo della seta e della ruralità” (ecomuseum of silk and rural life), which alongside material evidence also presents the knowledge and traditional arts of rural life. Over the years, thematic days, workshops and activities have been organised with school groups, researchers and visitors.
The collection documents the Calabrian textile tradition and silk in particular, from the raw material to the finished product: traditional processing tools, semi-industrial machinery, natural fibres, yarns, garments and fashion accessories from the mid-nineteenth century to today. Historic silkworm-rearing techniques are still used to produce the fine yarn.
