About the museum
The Museo ambientalistico Madonita (MAM), considered the first ecology museum in Sicily, was founded in 1990 by Vincenzo Cannata, a scholar and enthusiast of the fauna of the Madonie, part of which is still present, endangered or already gone from the territory of the Geopark.
It is housed in a wing of Palazzo Notarbartolo, a 16th-century building erected on the parade ground of the old castle of Polizzi Generosa, one of the municipalities of the Madonie Park. Over four hundred stuffed animals are presented in their reconstructed habitats with video dioramas.
The visit is designed as an excursion through the Geopark: from aquatic environments to the woods and beech forests between 1,300 and 1,800 metres. The specimens come from old collections, from animals that recently died of natural causes or from donations by the local forestry service.
