About the museum
The museum is housed in the former prison in the centre of Petralia Sottana, a building of 15th-century origin that rises over three floors along the slope. It takes its name from Antonio Collisani, an amateur archaeologist, and holds the collection deposited by his heirs.
The geology section, opened in 2004, occupies the ground floor and includes the collection of Giuseppe Torre, with an interactive system on the geological history of the island. The route takes visitors from the time when the Madonie were a coral reef up to about three thousand years ago. The archaeology section, opened in 2008 on the lower floor, displays the Collisani Collection and the finds from the Grotta del Vecchiuzzo, a prehistoric site discovered by Collisani.
A permanent photographic collection is set up at Palazzo Pucci Martinez, seat of the Ente Parco delle Madonie, with works by Enzo Sellerio, Leonard Freed and Josip Ciganovic and images commissioned in 2021. A landslide in February 2022 forced the temporary closure of the museum, which reopened in September 2023.
