About the museum
The museum houses the collection of the Anatomical Cabinet of the University of Ferrara, whose core consists of specimens prepared by Giovanni Tumiati (1760–1804), professor of anatomy and obstetrics. In the 19th century the collection was enriched with new preparations, models and instruments from later anatomists.
The only ancient inventory was closed on 15 November 1871 and recorded 1,987 items; two copies exist. Over time many pieces were lost and the original labels were mislaid or mixed up, so the specimens are now arranged by type and preparation. In the later 19th century the museum went through a period of decline, and in the early 1980s it risked being abolished to make room for university expansion; it was then saved and reorganised.
Today the museum is part of the Sistema museale di Ateneo of the University of Ferrara. Its collections include osteological specimens, dissections of muscles, vessels, nerves and viscera, statues and plaster casts, 19th-century wax models, specimens in fluid, embryos and foetuses, anthropological and comparative anatomy specimens, histological slides and antique anatomical instruments.
