About the museum
The Museo anatomico veterinario in Pisa was founded in 1839 in connection with the university’s chair of zoiatria (veterinary medicine). Today it belongs to the University Museum System and is housed at the Department of Veterinary Sciences, in Viale delle Piagge.
The collections include remains of domestic and farm animals: skeletons, dried preparations, taxidermied specimens and specimens preserved in alcohol. The most represented species is the horse, because of the great economic and social importance it had in the past. The museum also keeps some exotic animals and numerous dromedary preparations from the San Rossore estate, where these animals were bred.
The museum offers free visits on fixed days and guided visits by reservation, led by the educational staff of the museum system.
