About the museum

The Domus Mazziniana is the heir of the Casa Rosselli-Nathan in Pisa, where Giuseppe Mazzini died on 10 March 1872. The house, declared a national monument in 1910, was razed to the ground on 31 August 1943. Out of its rubble, and taking up its moral legacy, the institute was founded after the war; it is now based at Via Giuseppe Mazzini 71.

The institute's aims are to study and explore Mazzini's thought, to disseminate his works and to collect and preserve documents on his life and teaching. Since 2002 it has been part of the network of Istituti storici di interesse nazionale (national-interest historical institutes), and in 2009 it was recognised as one of the places of memory linked to key moments of national history.

The museum is not a museum like the others, because it contains no works of art but the story of a life, told in multimedia form with figures, images, sounds and above all words. The route presents Mazzini as art critic, literary critic and theorist of music, but also as the conspirator who built a network of refuges in Switzerland, studied military maps and founded patriotic associations. The institute also has a library and an archive and offers educational activities for schools; virtual 360-degree visits are also available.
