About the museum
The Museo Archeologico Ambientale was created by the municipalities of San Giovanni in Persiceto and Anzola dell'Emilia, which wanted to set up a museum network. The first site was opened in 2004 in San Giovanni in Persiceto, at Porta Garibaldi, a former local prison (carcere mandamentale), where archaeological and archaeobotanical material from the Persiceto area is displayed, from the Roman period to the Renaissance.
The second site, opened in 2011 at Anzola dell'Emilia in a former carabinieri barracks, illustrates life in the local terramara (Bronze Age settlement), with a teaching room decorated with drawings and a 1:1 scale reproduction of a hut in the garden. This site has been temporarily closed for technical maintenance since 30 November 2024.
An integral part of the museum is the Laboratorio Archeoambientale, which analyses botanical remains from archaeological sites to reconstruct the ancient plant landscape. The museum is run by Agen.Ter, which also looks after other museums in the area, and offers educational activities for schools.
