About the museum
The Museo del Cielo e della Terra opened in 2000 in San Giovanni in Persiceto, in the province of Bologna. It explores the links between sky and earth, between stars and animals, between the Sun and plants, and the way humans use resources and technology. It is run by Agenter, which also runs the Museo archeologico ambientale and the Museo della macchina a vapore “Franco Risi”.
The historic core is the astronomical area in Vicolo Baciadonne, with the planetarium, the astronomical observatory and a large collection of meteorites. The planetarium has a dome about 9 metres in diameter, with more than a thousand stars projected and around fifty seats. The observatory, run by the Gruppo astrofili persicetani, is equipped with telescopes and an instrument for observing the Sun.
The museum also includes the Orto botanico “Ulisse Aldrovandi”, with more than three hundred plant species, the Laboratorio dell’insetto, a living museum devoted to insects, and Fisica Experience, with experiments and a laboratory on the history and teaching of physics. Shows, lectures and workshops are offered to the public and to schools.
