About the museum
The Matelica civic archaeological museum is housed in the former convent of San Francesco, within the Palazzo Finaguerra complex. It displays finds from Matelica and its territory, spanning from prehistory to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with particular emphasis on Picene remains. These include a bronze helmet from a tomb in the Villa Clara complex, said to belong to a Picene prince, sceptres, a situla and bronze weapons.
The best-known object is the Matelica globe, a spherical marble sundial with Greek inscriptions, dating from the 1st–2nd century AD.
After the damage caused by the 2016 earthquake, the palace has been closed and is undergoing restoration. The works, financed with around €2.3 million, include the museum space, educational workshops and a storage facility for the finds, which the municipality has moved to a building purchased for this purpose. No reopening date has been announced.
