About the museum
The gallery is housed in Palazzo Ottoni, a late 15th-century building erected for Alessandro Ottoni, of the family that governed Matelica as papal vicars from the early 14th century until around 1589. Over the centuries the palazzo was transformed several times and served as the residence of the vicars, a lodging for passing bishops, a private home and a barracks, until the municipality bought it in the 1920s. The municipal museums occupy part of the second floor.
The collection comprises fifty-two works by the neoclassical painter from Matelica, Raffaele Fidanza (1797–1846), including prints, drawings and paintings, and eleven 18th- and 19th-century canvases with portraits of figures linked to the town. Among the older works are a Sant’Onofrio nel deserto by Salvator Rosa and a Noli me tangere by Ercole Ramazzani.
