About the museum
The Lanciano castle stands just outside Castelraimondo, among the hills of the Macerata province. It was built between 1350 and 1418, when the da Varano family ruled the territories of Camerino, and its tall crenellated towers dominate the surrounding landscape.
For generations it was the residence of the Bandini marquises, who left traces of their taste and their collections there. Inside is the museum named after Maria Sofia Giustiniani Bandini, with about 400 works: paintings on canvas from the 16th to the 19th century, period furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries, drawings, prints (including a collection of Pompeian prints) and ceramics.
An unusual piece is a velvet and leather saddle that belonged to Christina of Sweden (17th century), which gives its name to one of the rooms. After the 2016 central Italy earthquake, damage to the structure made it necessary to close the museum.
