About the museum

The Museo Archeologico Comunale del Territorio Toleriense opened on 4 December 1986 under its original name, Antiquarium. It is the result of research, documentation and conservation work on the material culture of the area, designed as a tool for lifelong learning.

The initial display grew out of more than twenty years of documentation collected by the Gruppo Archeologico Toleriense di Colleferro, and over the years it was enriched with the results of excavations in the area, thanks to collaboration with the Soprintendenza archeologica per il Lazio (the archaeological heritage authority for Lazio). The route is chronological and presents the archaeology and palaeontology of the Upper Sacco Valley, particularly the Toleriense territory, up to the threshold of the industrial age.

The collections begin with Pleistocene deer fossils found in the area of the Castello di Colleferro, and with Palaeolithic stone tools from Colli S. Pietro, Casaletto and Colle Rampo. They are followed by protohistoric material, including that of a hut from the final phase of the Bronze Age at Coste Vicoi, the Archaic period, the Roman age and the medieval incastellamento (the fortification of settlements) linked to the Conti di Segni. A virtual tour of the site is also available.
