About the museum
The Museo Archeologico Ernico (MAE) was conceived as a reference point for the area, to present the archaeological features of Anagni, known above all for its medieval town and for the “schiaffo” (slap) inflicted on Pope Boniface VIII, but also rich in much older finds dating back more than two million years.
The first-floor display, devoted entirely to the earliest history of humans, was created through collaboration between the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio per le province di Frosinone e Latina (heritage authority), the Comune di Anagni and the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra and Polo museale of the Sapienza Università di Roma. The route unfolds over eight rooms, with information panels, video projections and life-size animal reconstructions.
Among the finds are fossils from the Coste San Giacomo site, about two million years old, including proboscideans, hyenas, gazelles and sabre-toothed tigers, and those from Fontana Ranuccio, about 400,000 years old, known for bone and stone tools and four rare teeth of Homo heidelbergensis. The human “evolutionary tree” is illustrated with reconstructed skulls, including australopithecines, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
