About the museum
The museum of Artena is housed in the 17th-century Granaio Borghese (Borghese granary) and holds a collection that grew out of two activities of study and enhancement: surveys carried out across the whole municipal territory and, above all, the excavation campaigns at Piano della Civita, where the ruins of an ancient settlement surrounded by imposing polygonal masonry walls stand.
The collection includes archaeological finds dating from the Eneolithic to the 8th–9th century AD, from the surrounding area, which is crossed by the ancient Via Latina, linking Rome to Capua. Alongside the new display of the museum, work has been done to turn the archaeological area into a museum site (musealizzazione), now equipped with guided routes, information panels and a visitor centre.
