About the museum
The museum was established in 1991 and opened to the public on 5 April 2002. It is housed in Succivo, in a late 19th-century municipal building, used first as a district prison and from 1930 as a carabinieri barracks. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale della Campania and from 2019 through the Regional Directorate of Museums.
The route illustrates the history of the Agro Atellano. On the ground floor a necropolis is reconstructed with infant burials in amphorae of the late imperial age; on the first floor are finds from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity, from the urban area and the necropolises, with a collection of red-figure vases produced in Campania. The second floor is devoted to long-term exhibitions on recent excavations.
