About the museum
The museum is housed in Nola in the former convent of the Canossian sisters, a large building restored by the municipality to hold the archaeological collections of the Nola area. According to regional tourism sources it opened to the public in 2009. Today it is a state museum run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Campania.
The display follows the history of the area from prehistory to the modern age. It begins with the prehistoric section, where one room is devoted to the volcanic activity of Somma-Vesuvius, with Early Bronze Age finds from the Palma Campania facies and traces of the Pomici di Avellino eruption. Several cist burials are reconstructed, including the Tomba dei Togati and the Tomba della danzatrice.
The following sections illustrate the last phase of Oscan presence, from the Roman conquest in 313–312 BC to the Social War, with material from the sanctuaries of Cimitile and San Paolo Belsito, and the Roman age, with funerary statues, reliefs, inscriptions and finds from the amphitheatre. On the first floor are the remains of the Imperial age and a room devoted to the so-called Villa di Augusto (Augustus' villa) discovered at Somma Vesuviana.
