About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Nola was opened in March 2000 and is regarded as a good example of the museographic reuse of historic spaces. The route passes through rooms of the 17th-century Palazzo Vescovile and spaces next to the cathedral, and ends in some rooms created in the 14th-century church of San Giovanni Battista dei Fustiganti, recovered through excavations and restoration.
The collections comprise the Treasury of the Cathedral, formed over the centuries by donations from bishops and illustrious figures; the works that survived the fire of 1861 that destroyed the cathedral; and works from churches of the diocese. The silverwork section, with processional crosses, monstrances, chalices and crosiers from the 14th to the 18th century, documents the activity of Neapolitan silversmiths in the area; the episcopal mitre of the 14th century stands out.
Among the most evocative rooms are the Salone dei Medaglioni (Hall of Medallions), with portraits of bishops and stone fragments of the ancient cathedral, and the Chapel of the Immacolata, the only one to survive the fire, which holds sacred vestments of embroidered silk. Among the paintings, the Annunciation by Cristoforo Scacco and the panels of the polyptych by Andrea Sabatini are noted.
