About the museum
The museum opened in 1988 in Lauro, in the province of Avellino, the birthplace of General and aeronautical engineer Umberto Nobile, known for designing and piloting airships and for his expeditions towards the North Pole. The venue is a historic building on Piazza Umberto Nobile, remodelled several times over the centuries and famous for its grotesque decorations in the manner of Vasari.
The route is divided into several sections illustrating Nobile's feats and the history of Italian airships. It holds relics and documents donated to the museum by the general's heirs and by the Aeronautica Militare.
The museum is run by the Comune di Lauro, which lists it among the places of interest in the town's cultural heritage and states that admission is free and that the entrance is accessible also to people with disabilities.
