About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Adrano is housed in the Norman Castle, the great tower that dominates the main square of the town. The first archaeological collection in Adrano dates back to 1902, on the initiative of the priest Salvatore Petronio Russo; after the dispersal of those collections and a second museum established between the two world wars, a new museum was started after the conflict, and in 1958 the municipal administration assigned the castle as its seat; it had also once served as a prison. In the following years the Soprintendenza di Siracusa officially established the Antiquarium.
The collections on display come from regular excavations and from occasional finds in the Adrano area and in other parts of central-eastern Sicily. The route occupies two floors. On the first floor are the documentation of the indigenous settlement of Mendolito (7th–5th century BC), with a bronze statuette of a banqueter and a large terracotta gorgoneion, the room of the necropolis with tholos tombs and their grave goods, and the prehistoric vases from the lava caves between Adrano and Biancavilla, including pottery of the Copper Age and Early Bronze Age. On the second floor are exhibited the materials of the Greek city of Adranon, founded according to Diodorus Siculus around 400 BC, and those of the Roman, Byzantine and medieval periods.
The castle chapel houses the historical-artistic and ethno-anthropological section, with fragments of 14th-century frescoes, a Pantocrator and a collection of 19th-century wax Infant Jesus figures. The museum also includes a library and an archive.
