About the museum

The Pinacoteca owes its existence to Nunzio Sciavarrello, an artist from Bronte who, together with his family, donated to the Fondazione Real Collegio Capizzi a rich collection of graphic, painted and sculpted works assembled over the course of his career. The donation was formalised on 22 March 2001. The large historic rooms on the ground floor of the Real Collegio were renovated to house the works, with independent access from Via Cardinale De Luca 14. The museum was officially opened on 10 October 2010 in the presence of Sciavarrello himself.

The collection documents Sicilian and Italian art of the 20th century from the 1920s to the 1980s and is arranged in two sections: one with works by leading figures of Italian art of the last century, and one devoted to Sicilian artists, in particular of the Scuola etnea (the Etna school). Among the names represented are Carla Accardi, Carlo Levi, Emilio Isgrò, Mirella Bentivoglio, Remo Brindisi, Ernesto Treccani, Filippo Scroppo, Marco Nereo Rotelli and many other Sicilian painters and sculptors.

The Pinacoteca is run by the cultural association for study, training, research and services “Nicola Spedalieri”, set up by the Fondazione Real Collegio Capizzi and the Municipality of Bronte, and it organises conferences, lectures and cultural activities. Since 2019 a partnership with the Pro loco Bronte has kept the museum open in the afternoons and at weekends as well.
