About the museum
Canegrate’s archaeological history begins in 1926, when the engineer Guido Sutermeister reported the discovery of several tombs at Santa Colomba. In the 1950s excavations directed by Professor Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller uncovered a large Late Bronze Age necropolis (13th century BC), which gave its name to the “Cultura di Canegrate” (Canegrate Culture), found in western Lombardy, eastern Piedmont and the Canton Ticino.
On the initiative of a young archaeologist from Canegrate, the municipality started an enhancement project in 2004, carried out with the support of the Lombardy Region and the approval of the Soprintendenza. On 3 May 2014 the Sezione archeologica named after Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller, housed in the Polo Culturale Catarabia, and an outdoor exhibition route, a kind of open-air museum linking the church of Santa Colomba with the cultural centre, were inaugurated.
The section displays staged reconstructions of two Bronze Age tombs, copies of finds from Tomb 75 (urn and earrings), photographs of the excavations donated by a citizen, and information panels on the discovery. The originals are kept in the Museo Civico Guido Sutermeister in Legnano and in Milan.
