About the museum

The museum tells the story of the northern side of the territory of Castelfranco di Sotto, between the Cerbaie hills and the ancient Lake Bientina, with original artefacts in stone, ceramic, metal and wood, coins, reconstruction models and educational panels. It is part of the Sistema museale del Valdarno di Sotto.

The exhibition opens with Palaeolithic tools and Bronze Age finds, a reconstructed hut in model form, and the burial of an adult woman dating to around 1200 BC. The Etruscan period is illustrated by many materials from the settlement of Ponte Gini, excavated between 1983 and 1986: bronze and glass-paste jewellery, coins, everyday tools, amphorae and tableware.

Of particular interest are the remains of a Roman wooden bridge discovered in the plain of Orentano in 1989, presented with a model, ceramics, coins, jewellery and rare iron tools. Among the rarest pieces are a medieval dugout canoe in oak and a hoard of 13th-century coins from the area of the ancient lake.
