About the museum
The museum preserves the sacred art heritage of the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Bientina, largely linked to devotion to the body of the martyr St Valentine, whose relics were transferred to the church in 1699. After that event many donations of sacred furnishings arrived.
The collection comprises more than a hundred objects, mainly silverwork of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as candlesticks, chalices, censers, monstrances and reliquaries, made by silversmiths from Lucca, Pisa and Florence. Liturgical vestments from the late 16th to the late 18th century are also on display, notable for the quality of their fabrics.
The pieve, which became a parish church in the 15th century and was consecrated in 1644, preserves a monumental 17th-century organ with a gilded wooden case and an interior decorated in the Rococo style, with a painted wooden ceiling.
