About the museum
The museum opened on 27 November 1999 and is named after Vittorio Bernardi, a scholar of art and archaeology who from the 1950s promoted excavations in the Bientina area and had already called for an antiquarium to house the finds. The exhibition is housed in the former church of San Girolamo, an oratory from the first half of the 17th century built by the confraternity of the same name. After a partial collapse in 1984 the building was restored and given a new use.
The display presents the results of research in the area of the ancient Lake Bientina, from the 19th-century discoveries linked to land reclamation to the excavations of the 1950s, with the necropolises of farms 54 and 56, and of the 1990s, with the settlements of Fossa 2 and Fossa 5. From the Fossa 5 excavation, dating to the Final Bronze Age, come bowls, cups and jars in impasto pottery; from the Fossa 2 site an Etruscan wine amphora, a bucchero cup and archaic jars. From the settlement and necropolis of farm 56 come large cinerary urns, gold earrings and an Attic lekythos.
According to the sources consulted, the museum is currently closed to the public.
