About the museum
The museum is named after Baron Gabriele Judica, who in the early 19th century carried out excavations at the site of ancient Akrai, the Greek sub-colony founded by Syracuse. His important collection remained for a long time in his palace, until a museum dedicated to him opened on 27 December 2014.
The museum is housed in Palazzo Cappellani, an elegant building in the classicising style that belonged to the ancient noble family of Palazzolo, the Cappellani della Formica e di Pirainito. The Sicilian Region bought it in the 1960s to house an archaeological museum.
The display cases hold more than two thousand finds. Most come from Judica's excavations at Akrai, but some also come from the Ferla collection and from the territory of Leontinoi. The route is spread over two floors: the lower floor presents prehistoric and protohistoric materials, while the upper floor, in eight rooms, shows the finds from the Corinthian colonisation and the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and late Roman periods. Among the objects are vases, lamps, everyday objects, unguentaria and a Greek stele. The museum is part of the system of the Parco archeologico di Siracusa, Eloro, Villa del Tellaro e Akrai.
