About the museum
The Museo archeologico ibleo is in Ragusa, in Via Natalelli, on the first floor of the Palazzo Mediterraneo, built at the end of the 1950s near the northern end of the Ponte Nuovo. It was officially established in 1961; the display was designed by the archaeologists Vincenzo Cabianca, Antonino Di Vita and Paola Pelagatti.
The collection has grown over the decades with materials from new excavations and with the transfer of various collections previously kept in Syracuse, including those of Paolo Orsi. The museum holds the archaeology and ancient history of the Ragusa province, from the Neolithic to Late Antiquity, and is run by the Parco archeologico di Kamarina e Cava d'Ispica.
The route is organised into six sections: prehistory; the Greeks and Kamarina; the indigenous peoples; the Hellenistic centres; the late Roman and Byzantine centres; and collections and acquisitions. On display are Neolithic and Early Bronze Age pottery, reconstructions of tombs from the Kamarina necropolis, the slab with the “Warrior of Castiglione” found in 1999, a 4th-century BC kiln reassembled, and the mosaic floors of a 6th-century AD church.
