About the museum
The Museo dei viaggiatori in Sicilia is housed in Palazzo Vaccaro in Palazzolo Acreide, a building of religious origin dating from the 17th century, rebuilt in the 19th century as a private residence and owned by the municipality since 1997.
The museum traces the writings and images of the first travellers and tourists in Sicily, from early curious visitors to young aristocrats on the Grand Tour. Engravings and views by artists and architects depict monuments, costumes, natural phenomena and exotic plants; every panel is paired with modern photographs of the places, which have often changed or disappeared.
The material includes ancient maps of the island, produced in Europe from the second half of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century, antique books on Sicily and the plates of Jean Houel’s “Voyage pittoresque” (1776–79), who explored Sicily from the Iblei mountains to Syracuse.
