About the museum
The museum illustrates the archaeological history of Lentini and its territory from prehistory to the medieval period, with materials from ancient Leontinoi and the main sites of the area. The first core of the collections derives from the former civic museum, which was entirely absorbed into the present museum. It is a set of materials of varied origin, largely of uncertain context. Many finds come from the excavations of the 1950s in the San Mauro valley, near the southern urban gate and a necropolis, and on the Metapiccola hill, where an Iron Age indigenous settlement stood. The rest derives from more recent research by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Siracusa.
The route, spread over three levels, starts on the ground floor with the prehistory and protohistory of the territory, the grave goods of the Cava Ruccia and Sant'Eligio necropoleis, the first contacts between natives and Greek settlers, and the first Greek imports in the Caracausi and Crocifisso settlements. It continues with materials from the sacred area of Metapiccola, the fortifications of the northern and southern gates, a stratigraphic section, the two suburban sanctuaries of Alaimo and Scala Portazza, and a section on collecting in Lentini and on the necropoleis of the Greek colony. The itinerary continues to the Middle Ages, with the rock-cut churches and the age of Frederick II, while the upper floor houses the underwater finds from Castelluccio and documentation of the territory from prehistory onwards.
