About the museum
Kamarina was founded at the start of the 6th century BC (598–597 BC) by Doric settlers from Syracuse, at the mouth of the River Ippari. Today only ruins and finds remain, mainly on the Cammarana hill in the territory of Ragusa; the Roman quarters built after 258 BC altered the layout of the ancient road of the 5th century BC.
The regional museum stands on the top of the hill around the temple of Athena, in a 19th-century rural baglio built around the remains of the temple, of which part of the southern wall of the cella and the foundations are visible. The building, near Scoglitti, is laid out in three pavilions and seven exhibition rooms and holds the archaeological documentation of the Kamarina area from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
The first room is devoted to underwater archaeology, with finds from wrecks lying off the city, including transport amphorae and a rare Corinthian helmet of the archaic age. The route also includes a rich collection of archaic trade amphorae, prehistoric and faunal finds from the area, reconstructions of tombs from the archaic necropolis and grave vases. A final section illustrates the public area of the city, the agora of the 5th century BC, with a reconstructed storeroom for Greco-Italic amphorae; in the courtyard the remains of the temple of Athena can be seen. The museum has undergone requalification works, with a new route using augmented reality and content on tablets.
