About the museum
The museum is in Zuglio, ancient Iulium Carnicum, in the 17th-century Palazzo Tommasi Leschiutta, a few steps from the remains of the Roman forum. It holds finds from the Carnic territory and from the excavations of the Roman town.
The display is spread over three floors. The ground floor is devoted to Carnia, with the prehistory and protohistory room, rearranged in 2004 as part of a project on the Celts in Friuli. It includes a reconstruction of a section of the Misincinis necropolis at Paularo (8th–4th centuries BC) and evidence of the presence of the ancient Veneti and of the Celts.
On the first floor are the finds from Zuglio in the area of the forum, the baths and private houses, including Pompeian-style frescoes from the frigidarium and furnishings from some domus. The top floor illustrates the commercial and religious life of the Roman town and the furnishings of the first basilica of the Pieve di San Pietro, which date between the 6th and 9th centuries. The museum also hosts a permanent exhibition on the five wooden sculptures of the altar by Domenico da Tolmezzo, found in 2016.
