About the museum

The Breginjski muzej comprises the old village core of Breginj, a complex of two-storey stone houses linked by ganki (wooden galleries). Formerly the houses were joined to a stable and a hayloft and built in a compact cluster with an oval ground plan, with circular streets running between them. This layout was a unique testimony to outstanding spatial and building heritage.

Today the old village core with the museum is the only witness to the appearance of the former village; together with the church of St Nicholas and the presbytery it is listed as a cultural monument. The preserved part of the core shows the living culture of the former inhabitants, the ingenuity of their practical solutions, and a harmonious fit with the natural environment.

The Tolminski muzej, in its list of collections it manages or professionally supervises, cites the ethnological collection in the old core of Breginj. In the summer months the bar Kuore Sa, serving local delicacies, is open in the garden of the old core.
