About the museum
The Guarneriana was founded in 1466, when the patriarchal vicar Guarnerio d’Artegna donated 173 manuscripts to the community of San Daniele del Friuli, giving rise to one of the first public reading institutions in Italy. Guarnerio, from a family linked to the castle of Artegna, trained in Rome in a humanist environment and in 1445 became vicar of the Patriarch of Aquileia, residing at San Daniele.
The collections grew over time, in particular through the donation of Monsignor Giusto Fontanini in 1736. Today the library is divided into two parts: the Sezione Moderna (Modern Section), open for loans and consultation, and the Sezione Antica (Ancient Section), which holds codices, incunabula and antiquarian books. The manuscripts can be consulted online through the Teca Digitale (digital archive).
The Sezione Antica can only be visited on a guided tour, with accompanied entries in small groups: it is possible to book visits for tourist groups, schools and universities, or to take part in the openings without booking on Friday afternoons and in those by booking on the last Sunday of the month.
