About the museum
The museum is housed in the former convent of San Domenico, in Corso Cavour, just outside the Etruscan walls of Perugia, where it has been since 1948. The collections, largely Etruscan, were built up mainly through 19th-century excavations in the Perugian necropolises, and also include prehistoric and Etruscan-Roman materials.
Among the most significant pieces are the sarcophagus of Sperandio, the Archaic bronzes of Castel San Mariano and the full-scale reconstruction of the Ipogeo dei Cutu, set up in the basement. On the two levels of the cloister the Etruscan-Roman stone collection is displayed, with urns, funerary cippi and inscriptions. The “sala dei bronzi” (bronze room) also brings together the prehistoric collections that belonged to Giuseppe Bellucci and Umberto Calzoni, reorganised to illustrate Umbrian and Etruscan development.
Since 1 August 2025 the museum has been closed to the public for requalification and accessibility improvement works; no reopening date has been announced.
