About the museum
The studio was founded in 1859, when Francesco Moretti, after studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Perugia, was called to restore the stained-glass windows of the cathedral of Todi. Driven by his interest in this art, in 1861 he bought from the Università libera di Perugia the stone building on Via Fatebenefratelli that still houses the workshop today: the studio on the ground floor and the family home on the upper floor.
The craft was passed down from generation to generation: from Francesco Moretti (1833–1917) to his grandson Lodovico Caselli, to the daughters Rosa Moretti Caselli and Cecilia Caselli, and then to Anna Matilde Falsettini and her daughter Maddalena Forenza. The family made stained-glass windows for important places in Umbria, including the cathedral of Perugia, the cathedral of Orvieto, the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Lower Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. Among the masterpieces is the Ritratto di Margherita di Savoia of 1881, while the Last Supper of 1925–1930 for the Glendale cemetery in Los Angeles bears witness to the reputation reached as far as California.
The studio retains its 15th-century appearance and the period frescoes restored by Francesco Moretti. Visitors see photographs, sketches and drawings of the windows, art objects linked to the family's interests, such as music and photography, and the tools, kilns and colours of the workshop, which is still in use.
