About the museum
The museum is housed in the 16th-century Palazzo degli Arcipreti della Penna, of a noble Perugian family. Here Ascanio della Penna in the 17th century and his descendant Fabrizio at the beginning of the 19th century assembled important art collections, which were unfortunately dispersed in 1875.
The building was renovated in the early 19th century, and its interior was frescoed by Antonio Castelletti with themes drawn from the myth of Paris. The ideal views of the Stanza dei Paesaggi, by the decorator and stage designer Pasquale Angelini, date from the same period.
Today the civic museum has two main collections: the collection devoted to Gerardo Dottori, an Umbrian exponent of Futurism, with a rich series of works, and the “Joseph Beuys a Perugia” collection, made up of six large blackboards created on 3 April 1980 at the Rocca Paolina during a public event with Alberto Burri. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
