About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Dogana pontificia (papal customs house), an 18th-century building commissioned by Pope Clement XIII near Forte Michelangelo, a short walk from the port of Civitavecchia. It was set up in the 1970s with materials from the former civic museum.
The route tells the story of the city, founded by the Emperor Trajan as the port of Rome, and documents the coastal area and nearby places such as Santa Marinella, Allumiere and Tolfa.
Among the main pieces on the ground floor are the statue of Apollo/Helios from the 1st–2nd century AD, thought to be a copy of the Colossus of Rhodes and found in the excavations at Villa Simonetti in Santa Marinella, and a Roman marble copy of Phidias's Athena Parthenos. The museum is run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio; re-display and cognitive accessibility works funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) are under way.
