About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Vitelleschi, a Renaissance building erected between 1436 and 1439 in the centre of Tarquinia and opened to the public as a museum in 1924. It holds the finds from the Etruscan city and its necropolises, among the most important in Etruria.
The ground floor houses funerary sculptures, including Hellenistic sarcophagi. The first floor displays the grave goods and the famous high relief of the Cavalli Alati, while the second floor is dedicated to paintings from Etruscan tombs, detached and reassembled on frames.
The museum now forms part of the Parco archeologico di Cerveteri e Tarquinia, together with the necropolises and the Museo Nazionale Cerite. The second floor is currently closed to the public for works financed by the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan).
