About the museum

The National Archaeological Museum of Formia holds Roman-period finds that survived the destruction of the Second World War or were recovered in excavations in the area. It is part of the network of state museums in Lazio, now managed by the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Lazio.

The collection consists mainly of sculptures of high artistic quality, dating above all from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, the period of the city's greatest prosperity. These are male and female statues of honorary character, found in the area of the town's forum and dedicated to distinguished members of the Formian community, such as patrons and magistrates, but also to figures of the imperial family, among them an image of Gaius Caesar, grandson of Augustus. Some sculptures found in the same place in the 1920s were housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and have recently returned to Formia: three male statues, a sacrificing statue, two draped female figures, a veiled head of a youth and a portrait of an elderly woman. Also on display are architectural elements, funerary finds and depictions of deities and mythological subjects that decorated the luxurious seaside villas along the coast, recalling Formia as a holiday destination for the Romans, including Cicero.
