About the museum
The museum is housed in the former monastery of Sant'Agata, in the southern district of Spoleto's historic centre, on an area occupied in Roman times by the theatre. The monastery, founded at the end of the 14th century on the remains of the 1st-century BC theatre, greatly altered its stage. The museum was inaugurated in 1985 and spreads over several levels, adapting the display to the historic architecture; a renovation project completed a first section of the new route in 2008.
The finds, including those from recent research, document the first traces of human presence in the area of the fortress and the centre, from the Bronze Age, and the development of the Umbrian settlement, attested by the rich grave goods of the 7th–6th century BC from the Piazza d'Armi necropolis. On the second floor are displayed materials from the Valnerina, including the late Bronze Age cinerary urns from Monteleone di Spoleto and the grave goods of the Norcia necropolis, as well as pieces from the Canzio Sapori collection donated to the State.
The section on the theatre presents the decorative sculptures found in the excavations of the 1950s, among them a statue of Aura reworked as Venus. The theatre itself, dating from the 1st century BC, is part of the visit: restored since the 1950s with the reconstruction of the tiers, it preserves the lower level well, with its walkable ambulatory, and hosts cultural events, including performances of the Festival dei Due Mondi.
