About the museum
The Rocca stands on the Colle di Sant'Elia and was built from the second half of the 14th century at the wish of Cardinal Egidio Albornoz; it has six square towers. It was the seat of papal legates and popes, and in 1499 Lucrezia Borgia stayed there briefly as governor of Spoleto.
From 1817 the fortress was used as a penal colony until 1982, when it passed to the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. Among the most remarkable rooms is the “Camera pinta”, with frescoes from the first half of the 15th century.
The Museo nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto, inaugurated in 2007, collects testimonies from the Spoleto area from the 4th to the 15th century in fifteen rooms around the Cortile d'Onore. The route begins with the first Christian communities and includes, among the most important works, the Triptych of Santa Maria delle Grazie by Niccolò di Liberatore.
