About the museum
Palazzo Collicola was built between 1717 and 1730 to a design by the Sienese architect Sebastiano Cipriani for the Collicola family, originally from Montesanto di Sellano, who became influential in the 17th century. The building rises over three floors, with rear wings that originally enclosed an Italian-style garden, and in 1728 Carlo Collicola was made a cardinal.
In November 2000 the palace became the seat of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna “Giovanni Carandente”, devoted to twentieth-century art. The collections include paintings and sculptures by Italian and international artists, displayed across eighteen rooms, among them Calder, Beverly Pepper, Moore, David Smith, Pomodoro, Burri, Consagra, Pascali, Accardi and Sol LeWitt.
The core of the collection comes from the Carandente donation and has been enriched by bequests and acquisitions, such as a painting left by Giacomo Panetti, a study by Guercino donated by the Palettoni heirs, and a sculpture by Carlo Lorenzetti bought in 2021. On the piano nobile the 18th-century Appartamento Nobile can also be visited, while the Biblioteca Carandente holds over thirty thousand volumes on modern and contemporary art.
